Linda Nathan

Class of 1982
"The courses were life changing. I was able to become certified as a math teacher at a place that would do it at a low cost, with a lot of support."

To Linda Nathan, the classroom had been a familiar setting. A graduate of the University of California Berkeley, Linda taught math and theater in Boston schools, but was in need of a teacher certification. This requirement brought her to Cambridge College. Linda quickly became immersed in the College’s culture of diversity. The non-traditional college setting was a new experience for Linda, who explained, “The point of Cambridge College wasn’t the term paper. It was to go out and make our work places better.”

This unique classroom experience allowed Linda to see education in a new light. The College’s acceptance of learners of all levels was unlike her undergraduate experience. Linda explains, “Cambridge College was a place where it didn’t matter where you came from. Once you were there, it was a matter of we’re all here together.” Linda completed her Masters of Education degree in 1982, and has been making positive changes in the world of education ever since. In 1998, Linda founded the Boston Arts Academy, which focuses on presenting arts alongside academics to a body of diverse Boston students. Linda received a doctorate from Harvard University, where she is currently a lecturer, and in 2009 published a book on her experiences teaching. Most recently, Linda was named the Special Advisor to the Superintendent of the Boston School System.
