Background
Dr. Fermín Jaramillo has been an adjunct professor at Cambridge College since 2019. He has also taught courses at other universities including; math, science, methods in standards assessments, English Language Development strategies, curriculum foundations and development, classroom management, writing across the curriculum, teaching strategies, early literacy, family and community engagement, and philosophies of education. These courses were for students earning Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees. These experiences have allowed him to continue his passion of teaching students and how to best motivate and mentor them.
Dr. Jaramillo is the Coordinator for Diverse Student Learners and Academic Achievement and Initiatives for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. His responsibilities include providing Professional Learning Communities (PLC) trainings for districts, hosting Counselor Network Meetings for elementary, middle, and high school counselors, conducting “A-G” course audits, and implementing the California Department of Education’s (CDE’s) Distinguished Schools, formerly Gold Ribbon, Program. As part of his schools visits, he has validated many sites, from elementary to high school, and learned about their model programs and practices. He also participated on Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) team visits to high schools.
He previously served as San Bernardino County’s English Learner (EL) Support Programs Coordinator. In this capacity he planned, developed, and presented cohesive professional development based on language acquisition. Teaching these courses and providing trainings has given him a firm grounding in education methods and how to best present material to and teach adult learners.
He has served as a bilingual teacher’s aide, computer lab aide, teacher, high school principal, middle school assistant principal, principal of a pre-K through 8 extended special education opportunity program, and charter high school principal.
Dr. Fermín Jaramillo completed his doctorate based on effective mathematics instruction at the secondary school level and eliminating the achievement gap for low-income students. His other passions include effective teaching strategies for low-achieving students, the components of effective instruction, effective instruction for EL students, and ensuring equity for all students. This personal research has aided him in locating intervention models for all learners.
