Senior Human Resources Generalist Job Description

Job Summary

The senior human resource generalist will serve as the main HR contact for employees and provide HR guidance and support to all Cambridge College offices.  This position carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: benefits administration, employee relations, training, performance management, onboarding, policy implementation, recruitment/employment, and employment law compliance.

Requirements Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the relationship with vendors and brokers and stays current on all details of the College employment benefits programs.  Responsibility for “benefits fairs”, Open Enrollment, special vendor presentations, etc.
  • Manages all benefits communications with faculty, staff and administrators and manages all paperwork and invoices associated with benefits administration in an accurate and timely way. 
  • Serve as primary point of contact for employee questions related to benefits, payroll, policies, and other HR programs. 
  • Responsible for the day to day implementation of policies and programs, covering several areas including recruiting, training, employee relations, and engagement.
  • Ensure consistent interpretation and administration of company policies and procedures, practices and principles relating to employee relations and risk management; counsel and advise management and recommend approaches to resolve problems.
  • Responsible for the administration, compliance and security of accurate, timely and complete employee records.
  • Work closely with management and HR leader to improve working relationships, build morale, increase productivity and retention. Understand employee opinions and anticipate their needs and concerns.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to managers on carrying out goal setting, performance reviews and providing feedback to employees; ensure that annual reviews have been completed and that development plans are in place.
  • Provides counsel and direction to employees and managers in order to address employment-related matters; Conducts investigations in response to formal complaints.
  • Assists management with disciplinary and separation processes, partnering with HR leader on complex disciplinary issues and all separations.
  • Conduct employee onboarding and orientation and ensure processes are being conducted using Cambridge College’s resources and materials.
  • Responsible for the timely handling of unemployment documentation and reporting.
  • Assists with data requests and research for reports and surveys, such as IPEDS, CUPA, etc.
  • Assist in driving Cambridge College’s culture by promoting college-wide initiatives and building regional initiatives to support employee engagement.
  • Participate in the execution of the College’s training program.
  • Manage specific projects as determined by the VP of Human Resources, as well as participating in other areas of the HR team.

Other Responsibilities

  • Responsible for human resources records/reports and handle various audits on an annual basis.
  • Maintains human resource information system records and compiles reports from the database.
  • Maintain full compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations related to employment, employee relations, compensation and all other aspects of human resources. Participates in developing department goals, objectives and systems.
  • Participates in administrative staff meetings and attends other meetings and seminars.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.


Little travel is expected for this position.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience.
  • Must have knowledge of human resources policies and procedures and their application in the day-to-day working environment and familiarity with applicable state and federal laws.
  • Maintain excellent communication and relationships with others; be a team player and work collaboratively with others; maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects at the same time with limited supervision; excellent planning, organizational skills, time management, multi-tasking and decision-making skills.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
