Professional Writing Tutor Job Description

Job Summary

Cambridge College is a highly diverse College of primarily adult learners.  Most of our students are working parents, and some are new back to school after having been out of school for many years. As a result, we have many students who need supplemental writing support, often ongoing.

To help support our students, Cambridge College is looking to bring on at least two new Professional Writing Tutors to work on nights and weekends, especially weekends. These positions are currently 100% virtual with professional tutors working from home with our students through ZOOM. Our Professional Writing Tutors have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as a demonstrated ability to work with students with diverse learning needs and from a variety of backgrounds.  ESL experience is encouraged and former tutoring or higher education teaching experience is required. 

Essential Functions

  • Must be available on nights and weekends
  • Meet with students one-on-one virtually to review student papers and written work.
  • Develop relationships with students to provide ongoing writing and literacy support.
  • Manage an electronic scheduling system and reporting.
  • Create and conduct workshops and supplemental instruction literacy instruction
  • Participate in class visits to promote the Academic Success Center
  • Collaborate with other tutors
  • Attend department meetings and other professional development as requested.
  • Maintain confidentiality of disability status and follow all FERPA guidelines
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of students with physical, learning, and mental health disabilities


  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communication, Writing, or related field. Master’s or Doctoral degree preferred.
  • Experience teaching or supporting writing at the college level
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Passion for working with diverse student populations, specifically with adults
  • Experience working with ESL students and tutoring in a writing center strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students
