Associate Dean for Online Programming Job Description

Job Summary

The Associate Dean for Online Programming will be charged with the strategic development, implementation, and evaluation of online course development across the College. Reporting to the Dean of Online Programming, this full-time academic/ administrative position is responsible for the oversight and direction of online course design and delivery. This position will interface with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and vendors as needed in the pursuit of excellence for the online learning program. This position will be responsible for supervising instructional designers as warranted by program growth.

Duties and Responsibilities

Performance expectations:

Design

  • Ability to be creative and exercise initiative
  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio scripts/video scripts, and storyboards
  • Adapt coursework to assist learners with disabilities so that they are able to experience the same learning opportunities as others
  • Apply relevant instructional design models to the design and development of online, blended, web-enhanced, and traditional learning environments
  • Continuously explores new course design strategies and contemporary learning models
  • Create engaging learning activities and compelling course content that enhances retention
  • Create realistic objectives for learning or performance for students and instructors.
  • Create supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role plays, games, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective instruction for several different pedagogical orientations
  • Design a variety of instructional materials for traditional instructor-led courses, online programs, web-based learning aids or products, and other programs as needed.
  • Develop learning objectives, structure learning activities, create visual aids for online and face-to-face interactions
  • Develop materials for courses based on information provided by subject matter experts and instructors to create the best coursework possible
  • Provide exercises and activities that enhance the learning process
  • Provides consultation to faculty to support the design and development of quality course materials, learning objects, and courses for various modalities
  • Redesign courses for online presentation that are conducive to distance learning programs while still adhering to academic goals of the institution.
  • Visualize instructional graphics, the user interface and the finished product

Assessment

  • Conduct needs assessment and usability analyses, and develops metrics to evaluate design impact and success
  • Conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and contexts
  • Decide on the criteria used to judge learner's performance and develop assessment instruments
  • Analyze courses to ensure they meet or exceed institutional standards, and provide reports for accreditation reviews.

  • Ability to collaborate, persuade, gain cooperation, and acceptance of ideas and negotiate and resolve conflicts on major projects

Project Management

  • Demonstrated intermediate project management skills
  • Maintain project documentation and course folders
  • Manage campus-based instructional design projects that support student success
  • Planning and managing course development and design projects
  • Recommend changes to existing courses, including technology or instructional methods, to better adhere to delivery options for the course

Training

Design and conduct workshops in multiple modalities for faculty related to effective technical and traditional teaching strategies that support and promote quality course design

Software Skills

  • Intermediate-level proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Basic HTML programming knowledge
  • Advanced proficiency with visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Advanced knowledge of course development software and eLearning (Jenzabar) Learning Management System
  • Utilize eLearning development tools and software as part of course development

Other Skills

  • Knowledge of learning theory, instructional technology, and adult learning theory
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Possess and apply comprehensive knowledge of instructional design theories, concepts and practices with the ability to use in complex, difficult and/or unprecedented situations as it pertains to the departmental focus
  • Remain aware of all emerging instructional technologies and make recommendations about when to adopt certain systems to continue to offer the best learning experience possible
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in designing and developing of instructional experiences and online curriculum development
  • An earned Master's degree and a record of successful management of online program development
  • Experience with eLearning (Jenzabar) required

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in a role requiring dynamic and abstract problem solving methods in adaptive situations
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating online or face-to-face workshops
  • Minimum three years leadership experience in a higher education organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Strong innovative and collaborative skills in effectively working with internal and external constituencies and organizations
  • 2-4 years of experience in developing online, mobile training, and instructor-led courses

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of streaming audio and video, file types and formats, and experience with online conference software.
  • Experience applying the Quality Matters rubric and Standards to online and blended design
  • Experience with Moodie
  • Experience managing direct reports and/or projects
  • Experience with Adobe Connect, Captivate, Techsmith products (ling, Snagit), Adobe Presenter, and/or other synchronous and asynchronous online learning development tools
  • Experience with new models of instruction
  • Experience working in a virtual environment or multi-campus environment
  • Have a background in accessibility, usability, and experience design, information design and communications, as well as knowledge of instructional design models, strategies, and best practices
  • Master's or Doctorate degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Instructional Systems, Distance Learning, eLearning, Adult Learning and Development, or related field
  • Prior teaching experience in the college or university environment

Physical Effort Required

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk, hear, and effectively communicate with others in person and in writing. The employee is required to be mobile. The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to see others and read documents. This job requires the employee to spend lengthy periods of time performing computer assisted work.
