Adjunct Faculty, In-Seat, School of Undergraduate Studies Job Description

Job Summary

Cambridge College is seeking candidates for in-seat Adjunct Faculty for the School of Undergraduate Studies. The mission of Cambridge College is to provide academically excellent, time-efficient, and cost-effective higher education for a diverse population of working adults for whom those opportunities may have been limited or denied. The School of Undergraduate Studies seeks individuals with academic credentials in the field of History, Political Science, or Sociology to teach in-seat to undergraduate students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned courses as specified in the schedule and course contract
  • Evaluate and select texts and instructional materials; prepare course materials and lesson plans
  • Provide students an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the School, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria
  • Use the College’s learning management system and Concourse Syllabus Generator to post syllabus, assignments and other materials and to communicate with students
  • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions or examinations; provide feedback in a timely manner on student progress
  • Be available for student consultation through office hours or scheduled appointments or by phone or email
  • Maintain records of enrollment and attendance, assessments and grades, submit class rosters and grade sheets by the deadlines established by the College
  • Encourage students to submit course evaluations, review course evaluations when available and use feedback to improve course delivery
  • Revise and update course content as needed
  • Attend one or more orientation sessions to become familiar with the College’s mission and teaching philosophy, policies and procedures and the learning management system
  • Meet with the Dean or Program Chair as needed to discuss all aspects of the course including student progress and curriculum development (may be required to provide input into program development)
  • Submit an annual performance review

HIS 344 History and Theory of the Labor Movement

Mondays, 6:00pm – 8:30pm

Class Description:

What are the origins of the modern labor movement? How is it changed and adapted in the 20th century? What new developments have occurred in the 21st century? What laws govern unions? What have unions done for workers? How have free trade, globalization, the economy, and current trends in political thought affected the effectiveness of unions? Is the labor movement still necessary and relevant to today’s workers? This course will examine the formation of the AFL and the CIO, the merger AFL-CIO, and the new Coalition for Change. It will analyze the growth of industrialism and de-industrialism, consider the roles of race and class in the movement, and study the theories of the movement that brought it together and split it apart.


  • Master’s Degree in the relevant area, terminal degree preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience in an appropriate organizational work setting
  • Prior teaching experience in a graduate or undergraduate program or corporate training, particularly to adult students
