Academic Coach Job Description

Job Summary

This full time position provides academic coaching to undergraduate students at Cambridge College. Cambridge College's mission is to provide academically excellent, time-efficient and cost effective higher education for a diverse population of working adults. As such, the academic coach should enjoy working for and with a diverse array of people, is enthusiastic about the mission of the College, and exhibits superior customer service skills and professionalism in their daily interactions and communication with students and colleagues.

The academic coach serves as an academic mentor, coach, and advisor, who is focused on the success of his/her students. The Academic Coach partners with students throughout the life of their academic program, serving as students' primary source of support to ensure each student is making meaningful progress in their program. The Academic Coach works with his/her assigned students, helping them overcome any obstacles to learning and understand program expectations. The Academic Coach connects student to professional staff, faculty, or needed resources to ensure each and every student is receiving the support required for success.

The position reports to the Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising, and works closely with a team of advisors, coaches, faculty, and professional staff from other offices to ensure consistent delivery of academic planning and support services to students. The academic advisor/coach must be available to work a flexible schedule (including evenings and occasional weekends).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide advising and academic coaching for a caseload of new and continuing students.
  • Support students in their educational planning and progress from enrollment to graduation.
  • Monitor the academic progress of students, and collaborate with students to develop a personalized action plan tailored to meet students’ academic and professional goals.
  • Guide students to develop accountability for their decisions and an understanding of how those decisions impact their success.
  • Create and update Academic Plans and assist students in the registration process.
  • Verify that transfer credit for incoming new students has been evaluated and credited.
  • Ensure that students engage with faculty or access the appropriate supports in any area where they require deeper academic support.
  • Employ strong active listening and interviewing skills in order to provide students with a professional evaluation of their academic support needs.
  • Help students identify and eliminate any barriers to academic success.
  • Collect data and maintain appropriate documentation of outreach and meetings with students.
  • Maintain regular communication with students according to college protocol.
  • Work with students to develop effective study habits, learning strategies, organizational and time management skills.
  • Evaluate student learning styles, skills, deficiencies and goals; identify appropriate learning resources for them to use; and facilitate their use of those resources.
  • Help students navigate college services, make internal and external referrals as necessary, coordinate follow-up and document outcomes.
  • Outreach to at-risk student populations, monitor their academic progress, and intervene as necessary to assist those students having difficulty.
  • Assist students in career planning within the boundaries of his or her expertise, and direct students to planning resources in other areas as appropriate.
  • Participate in new student advising and registration programs and orientations.
  • Provide classroom presentations relevant to advising and academic coaching services and resources.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees

Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience working in a service-oriented environment, teaching or university setting
  • Must have a strong commitment to education and have the counseling or coaching skills required to effectively keep students on track
  • Strong customer service orientation and excellent communication skills

Skills & Knowledge Required 

  • Proficiency in the use of technology in advisement services
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong problem solving and time management skills
  • Must be organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to successfully resolve student issues from request through resolution
  • Skilled at connecting and building rapport with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to follow directions, complete tasks accurately, and accept supervisory input
  • Commitment to treating fellow employees, students, and the institution’s guests with civility, and to refrain from actions that disrupt the efficient functioning of the College
  • Familiarity with online learning, online coaching, and Internet technology a plus
  • Familiarity with various theories of learning, especially those related to adult learners and English language learners a plus
