Recovering from Hurricane Maria

Many horrific and sorrowful scenes and stories have come from Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, the strongest storm to make landfall in the U.S. territory in 85 years. But Cambridge College Puerto Rico has been a source of optimism, help and hope for many. The campus building sustained minimal damage from the hurricane but radio, Internet, mobile connectivity and phone services were interrupted. Classes had to be suspended.

Within days of the storm, the College’s administrative staff. Led by Campus Director Santiago Mendez, were able to reach out via email or phone to each of its 240 students and all of its 40 faculty members to determine their condition, whereabouts, and ability to continue with their classes.  The campus became a help center where students were invited to us the facilities to access water, bathrooms and the Internet.

One month after the hurricane, on October 21, all of the campus’ 102 courses resumed, in class and online, with 231 students returning – 95% of the enrollment.

I am proud of how quickly the College became fully operational,” says Mendez-Herdandez, “I am profoundly grateful for the concern expressed to the College and me by the College’s administration in Boston during and after the hurricane. Their support was essential in our recovery. Their help and kindness made us stronger.”
