Interpreter Training Certificates
The Medical Interpreter certificate is a 3-semester, 210-hour course of instruction, the goal of which is to enable students to provide medical interpreting services with confidence and accuracy. Students enroll in two courses per semester, meeting two evenings per week, except for the internship course which is scheduled on an individual basis during business hours Monday through Friday.
For interpreting students needing to improve their English language proficiency, a series of three communication courses designed especially for the prospective interpreter are offered, one per semester.
The American Sign Language Medical Interpreter certificate is a 3-semester, 210-hour course of instruction, the goal of which is to enable the professional interpreter to provide services in a medical setting to persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind. By using American Sign Language, the interpreter assists both patient and provider with inproved confidence, experience and accuracy.
The Mental Health Interpreter certificate (2 courses) is being offered to graduates of the Medical Interpreting Training Program and to those who are currently in professional practice.
Students learn how to meet the needs of both patients and providers by becoming more fluent in English, mental health terminology, and one other language.
Students will become familiar with the DSM, mental health diagnoses and treatment options, frequently prescribed psychopharmaceuticals, and appropriate modes of interpreting for the mental health patient. Both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting will be considered as well as clarification of the role of the mental health interpreter.
The Human Services Interpreter certificate is a 3-semester, 210-hour course of instruction, the goal of which is to enable the student to provide interpreting services and other functions in a variety of human service environments. The student will enroll in two courses per semester, meeting two evenings per week.
Medical Administrative Assistant / Medical Interpreter There are two options: take the courses that prepare you to work as a medical administrative assistant, or take these courses and the medical interpreter courses, preparing you for both kinds of employment.
